Abstract

Academic libraries play an important role in ensuring equitable access to information, learning resources, and educational environments for persons with disabilities. This study examined accessibility and inclusive practices at the Central Library of the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), India. A descriptive approach was employed using direct observation of the library environment and an accessibility checklist covering physical access, internal circulation, seating, sanitation facilities, accessible information resources, and assistive technologies. The findings indicate that the library provides several supportive physical-accessibility facilities, including accessible pathways, ramps, elevators, circulation spaces, study areas, and adapted service facilities. However, important gaps remain in services for users with visual and hearing disabilities, accessible-format collections, specialized information services, and assistive technologies. The study highlights the need for a more comprehensive accessibility framework that integrates physical infrastructure, accessible information resources, assistive technologies, and inclusive library services to strengthen participation and educational access for persons with disabilities in higher education.
